We know that "2nd quality" can mean different things.... So what does "2nd quality" mean at Profound Glass? We like to think of our 2nd quality opals as "Almost 1sts" because they are exactly that: just shy of being 1st quality. Most of the time an opal will be moved into 2nd quality because it does not have perfect, bright and consistent fire. Other "imperfections" could be that the opal is outside size tolerance (too thin or too thick) or has a small (virtually unnoticeable) scratch or pockmark that is unacceptable based on our 1st quality standards. Of course there are many other reasons why an opal could be deemed 2nd quality, but no matter the reason the opal is still very usable (never any compatibility issues) and a great value for the artists willing to accept a little variability in their opals.
